8th Unlock the Past Cruise: Day 4 Warnemünde, Germany
For those that are following my trip, Day 4 (Tuesday 14 July 2015) – I have to write the day and date as otherwise I have no idea of what day were up to, let alone the date. Anyway Day 4 of the Unlock the Past cruise took us to Germany. Scheduled to dock at 9.30am, we actually arrived early as there was a medical emergency and someone needed urgent hospital treatment.
As the ship was in port from about 8.30am until midnight, and tours were happening all throughout the day, including some to Rostock or Berlin which is several hours away, there was only one talk one the program, and that was after dinner. So people had a day to do their own thing and enjoy the sites.
Unlike the freight yard port at Belgium, here we docked right at a town. And in fact our ship was one of four ships docked there for the day. After disembarking, we had a five minute leisurely walk and the little seaside town of Warnemünde.
The day started cool and rather grey, but brightened up later which was lovely to see. The town was busy, busy with tourists everywhere making the most of the icecream and waffles stands, the clothing shops, the cafes and street entertainment.
So after a wander around it was back onboard for a late lunch, then a quiet afternoon. Dinner was a German themed one with a German band playing, we had a choice of about 25 different types sausanges, and numerous desserts like black forest cake, beesting, jelly layered in the German flag in the flag colours and more.
The evening talk of “Gripping Writing” was by Carol Baxter. In this she encouraged us to look for the hook when we write. The intrigue, the scandal, the mystery. Something that you ca write about that will keep people reading on. My favourite quote from her talk in relation to writing your family history was …
“take off your historians hat,
and put on your storyteller hat”
… isn’t that cool? Well, I thought so anyway. She also enlightened us to using records. Or should I say, using the facts from records. But to give them a voice. Don’t just write the fact itself, but give it character, give it context, give it a ”voice”. There is simply no point in writing a family history that no-one wants to read, so MAKE it interesting. You have the records, now you can write it. Her talks are always fascinating, and make me think I need to try to write better for my blog. No promises, but I shall keep trying!
