8th Unlock the Past Cruise: Day 10 Stockholm, Sweden

Day 10 of our 14 day cruise, and Monday 20 July 2015 was our day to visit Stockholm, Sweden. After my super-exciting day yesterday in Finland, I would’ve been quite happy to stay onboard – however I did venture out with my roommate Helen, and we did a Hop-on Hop-off bus tour and got to enjoy some of the sights of Sweden.

As it started raining during the tour, so we decided not to actually get off, and instead enjoyed the sights from the bus for the 1 1/2 hour tour. We saw a lot – it took us all around Stockholm, and I’m sorry I don’t remember the official names for the places. But still you get to see a little of Sweden from the photos I took.

Again, there were numerous other cruise ships docked in the harbour, and you could see that Stockholm was swarming with tourists.

Back onboard and there were two talks again:
– Video for Practice, Promotion and Profit – Gordon Nuttall
– Scanning and Restoring Old Photographs – Jane Taubman

Gordon’s talk wasn’t genealogy-related, but the points mentioned can certainly be applied to it. Afterall people make movies these days and put them on YouTube. You can use it to promote a product, or you can use video as a means to conduct an interview. And how it all looks depends on a number of factors: the equipment, what quality of video do you require, how long is your presentation, what type of environment you are filming in, and how much you have to spend on it. Lighting was covered as were various types of microphones and what works best in various circumstances. And for those in front of the camera he gave some tips of things to not do, and not wear. All very interesting, and plenty there I’d never thought of.

The last talk of the day was Jane’s on Scanning and restoring old photos. It was a good talk, but was a fairly basic level covering the types of scanners (desktop, camera, phone, slide and negative scanners). She gave tips on how to prepare your images for scanning as well as minimum the types of file formats and DPI that you should be using, as well as a live demo on editing a damaged photograph on Photoshop Elements.

The late evening was social media-ing and working on these blog posts …

Beautiful pictures, I hope I can get over my fear of flying and get to Sweden someday. I need to find a lecture or webinar on restoring damaged photos one of these days, written instructions for anything tech does not work for me.
