RootsTech – Let’s Do It Again

RootsTech – Let’s Do It Again

RootsTech is one of those events that has been on my bucket list ever since I heard how exciting the first one was. One of those “would-be-nice-to-do- but-never-really-expecting-to” things. Afterall America is SUCH a long way away (over 24 hours of flying), and it does cost a small fortune just to get there. So am I really going to spend all that to go to one event? I could use that money on a mega-lot of certificates instead.

While getting more certificates is certainly tempting, the attraction of RootsTech is compelling to say the least.

And I was fortunate enough to see my dream become a reality, when I attended RootsTech back in 2013.

To say this was fun, is a total understatement. And there are no genie events here in Oz that I can compare it to. Though I’m thinking that it might be along the lines of someone going to Comic Con (though I haven’t been to one myself) – but I think you get the gist of it anyway.

I was helping out on the Unlock the Cruises stand, and when I wasn’t there I was wandering around the Exhibition Hall seeing who I could see. And basically in awe of being in the same room as so many big name people.

One thing I remember from then was that as soon as it was over I said “let’s do it again!”. You know, just like you would when you’re a kid going on a ride “again! again!”

Well, it’s taken me two years, but now I’m back. And this year will be bigger than ever as the RootTech Conference has combined with the FGS Conference in the same venue. And the Expo Hall is now double the size of what it was – if that’s even possible.

There are over 300 talks scheduled to be held over 4 days – covering every imaginable topic. And while I should be taking the opportunity to learn from some of the best in to world my focus is w=elsewhere. As I’m primarily going to help exhibit on the Unlock the Past Cruises stand, I’ll be hanging out in the Expo Hall. And when I’m not at the stand, I guarantee that I’ll be mingling with others elsewhere in the hall.

My goal: to meet people. I did that last time. And I want to do it again. There’s sooooooo  many people I know from online that I haven’t yet met in person. So that is my goal. So we’ll see how well I do by the end of the week.

It’s Tuesday today, and while a lot of people have already arrived, others are still arriving today, and tomorrow is when it all starts.

Meanwhile the air is cool, but the sun is shining – so I’m off to wander around Salt Lake City!

  3. I am so glad I made the decision to come this year there are so many geneabloggers here that we really should get the message out there to the community that genealogy is all about collaboration.
You never know what your connection may be with the person next to you. Serendipitous moments are such a joy.
    We are all related!!
